Introduction

Spain is a land of breathtaking landscapes, colorful history and a deep, complex culture in which wine has long played an important role. The third largest country in production, Spain ranks first in land under vine. Diversity and innovation are the key factors bringing Spain back into the world wine market.

Italy is home to some of the oldest wine producing regions in the world and has a rich and diverse wine heritage dating back more than two thousand years. Famous for its bewildering diversity of both grape varieties and wine styles, Italy is also significant for the sheer volume of wine it produces and is head to head with France as the world’s largest wine producer by volume. Sommelier Kenneth Spears handpicks three wines from each country for you to taste side by side.

Ca’ Furlan Prosecco NV
It is made from Glera grapes. This green-skinned variety has been grown for hundreds of years in the Veneto and Friuli regions, most famously to produce sparkling Prosecco wines. This wine has apple blossoms, pear scents and honey combine in the brisk sparkler. It’s clean and round, with enough acidity to cut the sweetness.

Barcelona Brut Cava NV
The Celler Barcelona Cava is fresh, fine and fun to enjoy. This is a gentle brut that is dry, yet not too acidic; a perfect choice for appetizers on the back porch. Medium straw in color with light yellow tint; flowery and bright in the, endearing, core fruit, peach skin in the aromas; medium bodied, soft and smooth on the palate; dry to off dry, medium acidity, nicely balanced; offers pleasing flavors of flowers and apples; medium finish, smooth aftertaste.

Bortoluzzi Cabernet Sauvignon 2012
100% Cabernet Sauvignon from five acres with gravelly, red soil loaded with minerals. Temperature-controlled fermentation enables this wine to fully express its varietal character. Light straw yellow. The bouquet has notes of bell pepper, peach and sage leaves endowing it with distinct elegance. Full on the palate, fresh, very appealing, with complex varietal flavors – a Cab with lots of sliced grapefruit and apple character. Full body, with loads of gooseberries and a pretty aftertaste beside.

Bodegas Olvena Cabernet Sauvignon Crianza 2009
This is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes were carefully sleected lots and fermented with stems. The wine was subjected to extended maceration. This is a wine with big red fruits, spice and a long toasty finish.

Vignavecchia Chianti Classico Reserva 2010
The 2010 Chianti Classico Riserva is a stunningly beautiful bottle of wine. Like all of the house’s reds, it is staggering in its richness and opulence, yet there is plenty of minerality, freshness and verve to create an intriguing tug of war between those elements. Violets, tar, crushed rocks, black cherries and French oak come together in this majestic, towering red. It is a texturally gorgeous wine that boasts tons of fruit supported by finessed tannins.

Raimat Castell De Raimat Tempranillo 2012
Only the finest fruit from the best vines in the vineyard are selected to make this tempranillo wine. This deep red wine has a long cherry finish and hints of minerality. Dark purple. Jammy black and blue fruits on the nose and palate. Fruity and nicely focused, with a spicy element adding lift to the smooth, seamless finish.
