Spain was one of the earliest areas in Europe that was planted with grapes. Back around 2500 B.C., tribes traveling out of Africa established Spain’s first wine regions. The ancient Romans took it to the next level by introducing technology that allowed for more grapes to be crushed, yielding more wine. Spain is the now world’s third largest producer of wine behind Italy and France with 2.7 million acres dedicated to vineyards. There are nearly 800 wineries scattered throughout the country of Spain. The majority of wine, 80% in all, is produced by just a few companies. In Spain there are more than 600 grape varieties that are grown and produced. Tempranillio and Garnacha varietals are the primary grapes found in the Rioja region. These two medium bodied jewels of Spain play a major role in a couple of the country’s finest wines, Rioja and Ribera del Duero. Tempranillo grapes produce very complex wines hinting of plums, vanilla, cassis, and tobacco. Garnacha grapes are famous for use as a blending grape in both France and Spain. Garnacha or Grenache as it is known throughout the world is medium bodied with berry flavors. The Garnacha grape is used as a blending grape for full red wines or roses that produce fruity or berry like flavor. This grape is also produced as a single varietal wine.
Gran Sarao Cava Brut NV – Josep Masachs, S.A. is a family firm dedicated to the production of Cava (Sparkling Wine) made by the Traditional Method. The company is located in Torrelles de Foix, in the heart of the Cava and D.O. Penedés Region, at 55 Km. south of Barcelona, northeast of Spain. The Masachs family elaborates cavas since 1880, and therefore belongs to the pioneers of cava production in Spain. The proud produced Gran Sarao cava, blend of 30% Macabeo, 40% Xarel·lo, 20% Parellada and 10% Chardonnay, transmits the long history of cava making in the family. Cava Gran Sarao is the sparkling sensation of Spanish traditional method cava and represents a perfect balance between youth and maturity. It’s pale yellow, giving off light bubbles and crown making. Yeast touches in a fruity background of ripe apple, banana and pineapple. Good mouth feeling, with a light touch of sweetness, harmonious, fresh, elegant, tempting and with character. Gran Sarao cavas are always disgorged prior shipment in order to offer all the fruitness and freshness to the consumers.
Sierra Cantabria Rosado 2013 – Founded by Guillermo Eguren, who is a self-made “bodeguero”, coming from a family tradition of vine growers. Today, the fourth generation of the Eguren family, Marcos Eguren, is the winemaker and director of the winery. Sierra Cantabria has come to the forefront of Spanish wineries in the last 15 years. Vineyards are located in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, one of the most famous towns in Rioja, known for the quality of its grapes. The 2013 Rosado, made from a blend of tempranillo, garnacha and viura, has clean and bright salmon color. Aromas of red berries, aniseed light notes and nuances of fresh fruit, strawberry, blackberry, raspberry, pomegranate. Fresh, fragrant, well balanced, wrapped by the fruit and acidity with memories of pomegranate, watermelon, etc. Intense, persistent, leaving a lively length.
Dominio de Eguren SA Codice Tinto 2013 – Founded by the fourth generation of Dominio de Eguren Family was conceived as a project to produce fine wines and offer them to consumers at a reasonable price. The 2013 Codice Tinto, made of 100% Tempranillo, has ruby red with violet hues, clean and very brilliant. Fruity, raspberry, red fruits aromas; very characteristic of the variety. Light notes of vanilla and spice. In mouth the wine is medium-bodied with a good equilibrium of tannins and acidity. Finishes with notes of raspberry, vanilla and light notes of wood.
Spanish Vines Crianza Tempranillo NV – Spanish Vines is a proprietary estate wine from Bodegas Purisima Concepcion located within the Ribera del Jucar DO. Despite, being the youngest DO in Spain’s history, officially acquiring its status in 2003, wine has been produced in the region for centuries. In fact, Purisima Concepcion’s records date back to 1560, when the Teatino monks planted the very first vines in the San Clemente municipality. In 1958, the estate was founded and began producing predominantly Tempranillo (locally referred to as Cencibel) along with Bobal, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc and Moscatel. Spanish Vines, made of 100% Tempranillo, is a new world red with notes of plush, ripe red fruits and an impressive complex structure. Aromas of freshly dipped chocolate-strawberries and tobacco are followed by a lengthy finish revealing subtle oak and zing of fresh acidity.

This winery is located in the best terroir of La Mancha found in the eastern region of the DO. The soil is the reason the winery committed to purchasing 247 acres of vineyards with deep sandy soils, iron-rich clay, and a thick layer of chalk that are located at an altitude of 1,980 feet. The 2012 Triga is a blend of Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine displays intense black and blue fruit aromas with nuances of spice and florality. A deep wine with rich flavors and long spice on the palate, which gives way to a focused finish. 93 Points – Vinous; 92 points – Wine Advocate; 91 Points – Wine Spectator
Honoro Vera Rose 2015 – Ateca Winery, founded in 2005, is the project of the Gil Family in the Denomination of Origin Calatayud, placed in the municipality of Ateca (in Zaragoza), 14km far from the city that names this D.O. Ateca wines are the result of a detailed work on selecting the grape, with exhaustive analytical and organoleptic quality criteria, coming from a harvest done in the precise moment of ripening. The Honoro Vera Rose is a blend of Tempranillo and Syrah. This medium-bodied rosé is dry with a nicely crisp acidity, and it is both refreshing and approachable. On the palate is primarily red fruit and cherry with a touch of strawberries and watermelon. The finish is very smooth. This rosé is ideal wine for outdoor dining, whether picnics or backyard barbecues.
