In a world where bigger is better, Syrah is the ideal choice. It’s darker than Cabernet Sauvignon and contains high amounts of health-invigorating antioxidants. Syrah is responsible for some of the darkest full-bodied red wines in the world. It has dark fruit flavors from sweet blueberry to savory black olive. When you taste Syrah you’ll be greeted with a punch of flavor that tapers off and then has a spicy peppery note in the aftertaste. Because of its front-loaded style, Syrah is often blended with grapes that add more mid-palate, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, to help make the wine taste more complete. Traditionally in France, Syrah is blended with light-bodied Grenache and even richer Mourvedre to create the classic Côtes du Rhône blend. One of Syrah’s most valued assets is its ability to produce wines capable of aging and improving over many decades. Old World-styled Syrah from Italy and France tend to have more acidity and earthy-herbaceous aromas. New World-styled Syrah wines from Australia, The U.S. and South America usually have more fruit-driven characteristics with lots of spice. One of Syrah’s most valued assets is its ability to produce wines capable of aging and improving over many decades. With its massive full-bodied taste, Syrah pairs great with bold foods. You can pair Syrah with anything from a blue cheese burger to barbecue, the trick is to bring out the subtle nuances in the wine.
Barrel 27 Right Hand Man Syrah 2013 – When a complete food and wine geek and now one of the most progressive and even-handed winemakers on the Central Coast Mac Myers met another fledgling winemaker, Central Coast native Russell From, Barrel 27 was born to the words “Each bottle of this wine represents a dream realized by two friends”. The 2013 Right Hand Man is a blend of Syrah from vineyards situated on the West Side of Paso Robles and in the Santa Ynez Valley, it is easy drinking and approachable. A blend of 88% Syrah, 6% Petite Sirah, and 6% Viognier, this wine is riddled with licorice, sage, chocolate, violets, anise, leather, blackberry, grilled herbs, allspice, plum, smoke, and finishes with a juicy mouth feel and a velvety soft finish.
Chateau Mont-Redon Cotes Du Rhone 2012 – Established in 1344, Chateau Mt. Redon is one of the oldest wine-producing estates in France and the largest single property in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The vineyards are planted in the 13 grape varieties of the region and are covered with large, smooth stones which reflect the sun warmth by day and residual heat by night into the maturing grapes. This wine, blend of Syrah and Grenache, is deep violet red in color and the nose is intensely fruity, with mineral notes. This vintage brought remarkable freshness, as well as balanced tannins. Dark berries and raspberries on the palate are offset by slight grilled notes and nuances of licorice.
Tobin James Rock N Roll Syrah 2011 – Family owned and operated by Tobin James and Lance and Claire Silver since 1987. Tobin James wines boast true “Paso Robles in a Glass” character with intense varietal flavors, true to the appellation. The legendary Zinfandels, the stellar world class Syrah, Chardonnays, Cabernet Sauvignons, and Meritage blends reflect the Tobin James philosophy of Winemaking: Balanced complex wines with luscious intense fruit. 2011 Rock N Roll Syrah is another home run by Tobin James. A straightforward crowd-pleaser and one of the biggest and boldest, this Syrah has a light spice on the nose with that promised “wild” spicy finish. On the palate are dark berries, light smoke, and vanilla. It is fruity and smooth; you almost don’t notice that it carries about 15 percent alcohol.
Maison Nicolas Perrin Syrah 12 – Maison Nicolas Perrin is the union of two families who come from the two opposite ends of the Rhone valley, North and South. In the North, Nicolas Jaboulet, who grew up on the hillsides of Hermitage, and the Perrin family who has been in the southern Rhone, primarily in the prestigious appellation of Chateauneuf du pape, since the beginning of the 20th century. The Maison Nicolas Perrin Syrah, blend of 92% Syrah and 8% Viognier, displays bright ruby red color with purple undertones. Aromas of red fruit, full-bodied and very harmonious with aromas of black currant, blueberries along with notes of spice. The attack is fresh, the wine is lively and mineral with soft and round tannins. The balance between alcohol and acidity reveals a harmonious wine. The softness and fineness of Viognier allows to create a wine that is more powerful and full bodied than a simple Syrah.
Location F3 – Orin Swift Locations is a simple concept made complicated that ultimately became a great deal of fun. The simple: Make the best possible wine from a given country or location. The Complex: Going out and tracking down the vineyards which are capable of delivering the quality of wine needed. The Fun: Travelling the world to visit incredible sites and meet amazing people that challenge each other to make the best wine possible. F3 is the third release from Locations’ France project, a meeting of the Rhône and Bordeaux with a blend of Grenache, Syrah, and assorted Bordeaux varieties. The inky, purple color tone is evident suggesting power and finesse. Exotic aromas of plum, cassis, lavender, and hint of garrigue proudly welcome the tasting. With a fervent entry, dark fruits are immediately present followed by persuasive flavors of raspberry compote, boysenberry, fresh fig, and a tinge of bitter chocolate. Sweet and polished tannins glide effortlessly to the finish with freshness and vivacity. 91 Points – Robert Parker
