Wine blends offer more complexity than single varietal wines. In fact, some of the world’s greatest wines are made from a blend of grapes rather than a single varietal. By blending varietals, winemakers can change a wine’s qualities. At its most basic, vintners blend wine made from different grapes in order to add more complexity to the flavor and texture of a wine. The goal of blending wine made in different vintages is more to balance out the flavor characteristics. Some wine blends are made from classic recipes handed down from generation to generation. Other vintners create brand new blends in an attempt to produce a new and exciting wine that has flavor characteristics like nothing else on the market. Examples of red wine blends from wine regions all over the world are Super Tuscan Blends from Italy, producers of Super Tuscans decided to break the rules and make a new wine blended from grapes of their choosing such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Sangiovese, Syrah, Merlot, Petite Verdot. Bordeaux Blends in France, the only grapes allowed for use in a bottle labeled “Bordeaux” are Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot, Malbec, Petite Verdot, Carmenere, Cabernet Franc. If the vintner uses any other grapes, the wine cannot be labeled Bordeaux. Winemakers generally choose two to three different grapes form the approved Bordeaux list, but rarely, if ever, use all six grapes. Meritage Blends found their beginnings as a result of vintners producing a Bordeaux style blend of wine, but the grapes, nor the wine were from Bordeaux. Only wine made in Bordeaux can bear the name. Rhone-Style Blends from France’s Rhone region blends up to 15 different grapes to make sublime red and white wines. Primary grapes include Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault and Viognier. The Rhone is divided into sub-regions that all have their own blends, including: Châteauneuf-du-Pape, which are Grenache-based wines with many other grapes blended in. Côtes du Rhône are red wines made up of a spicy and rustic blend of red wine grapes. Côte-Rôtie is a blend of fragrant Viognier and spicy Syrah. Winemakers around the world are becoming extremely innovative in their wine blending techniques. New World winemakers often create daring blends from grapes not traditionally combined, creating new and exciting flavor and aroma profiles.
Branham Jazz 2012 – Branham Estate Wines began in 1994 with the planting of the Branham Rockpile Vineyard. In 1997, the Branham Obsidian Vineyard was purchased. These two vineyards represent the heart and soul of Branham Estate Wines. 95% of all fruit from these two vineyards utilized in Branham Estate wines. Owner and Winemaker Gary Branham with more than 40 years’ wine making experience is dedicated to producing high quality, hand-crafted wines, from estate grown grapes. Jazz 2012 is ten-year anniversary blend. Jazz made its stage debut in 2002 and is still going strong with this 10-year anniversary blend. With blend of zinfandel (40%), petite sirah (20%), syrah (20%), and cabernet sauvignon (20%), this proprietary blend never fails to satisfy the eye and palate. Refined melodies of black-plum, dark berries and coffee notes are enhanced by a purposeful symmetry of balanced tannins and acidity. Pair with music!
Westerly Cote Blonde 2012 – Located in the heart of Santa Barbara wine country, the wines from Westerly begin in the vineyards of small family-owned growers. Westerly is focused on two distinct and separate sub AVA’s within Santa Barbara County: Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara and Sta. Rita Hills. The objective at Westerly is to express the unique characteristics and individuality of these wine regions by farming and winemaking at the highest level. The Cote Blonde 2012 is blend of 87% Syrah, 13% Viognier. Both the Syrah and the Viognier for Côte Blonde are sourced from a single vineyard in the heart of the Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara AVA. Deep garnet in color, the 2012 Côte Blonde shows off an exuberant nose of white flowers and dried apricots. The palate has notes of dried fruit, earth, leather, soy and black tea with nuances of menthol and cinnamon stick. Full bodied and with a generous mouthfeel, it is nicely balanced with a medium level of fine grained tannins and refreshing acid, finishing long and spicy. Drinking very well now, it should continue to cellar to 2020. 92 Points – Wine Enthusiast, 92 Points – Wine Spectator
Highway 12 Sonoma Red Blend 13 – Highway 12 wines feature vineyards of the Highway 12 corridor through the Sonoma Valley and Carneros District. These appellations comprise their “neighborhood” and carry a special meaning for them. This is their home and their grower-partners are all friends who share pride in this region and still consider a handshake more binding than a contract. Blend of Merlot 64%, Syrah 15%, Cabernet Sauvignon 10%, Petit Verdot 7%, Malbec 4%, this new release of the wildly popular Merlot centered Sonoma Red Blend is the ultimate BBQ wine. Medium to full bodied featuring notes of black cherry, fig, cassis and cedar. A round mid palate and soft tannins lead to a gentle finish suitable for many culinary styles.
Le Mistral 2011 – Founded in 1972, the winery and home vineyards of Joseph Phelps are located in Spring Valley near St. Helena, on a 600-acre ranch that is characterized by rolling hills, California native oaks, and 100 acres of vines. Estate-grown fruit from Monterey County vineyard comprised 98% of the blend with the balance supplied by independent growers. The 2011 Le Mistral is blend of 51% Syrah, 39% Grenache, 7% Alicante Bouschet and 3% Petite Sirah and is dark and delicious with black cherry, dried herbs and pepper flavors. With a deep red color and intense character, it is spicy with complex layers of dark currant, licorice, red berry and a long, lingering and balanced finish.
Orin Swift Abstract 2014 – The history of Orin Swift Cellars dates back to 1995 when on a lark, David Swift Phinney took a friend up on an offer and went to Florence, Italy to spend a semester “studying”. During that time, he was introduced to wine, how it was made, and got hooked. In 1998 he founded Orin Swift Cellars and grew the company into a multinational brand that now includes 300 acres of vineyards in the Southwest of France. This international ambition has led to projects in Spain, Italy, Corsica, Argentina and other locations around the globe. Abstract is a blend of Napa, Sonoma, and Mendocino Grenache, Petite Sirah, and Syrah primarily from hillside vineyards. An alluring inky-purple achievement, the 2014 Abstract is replete with a vivid nose of red and black stone fruits, candied cherry, cassis, dried floral notes, and sweet oak accents. Fleshy and spirited, the wine evolves into a very complex flavor profile of dark berry preserve, raspberry jam, Asian spices, mocha, chaparral, and a hint of crushed rock minerality. An underlying acidity leads to a graceful and fine tannin chain that is seemingly endless.
