Established in 2004, SEXTANT WINERY is devoted to expanding the horizons of the central coast wine region by utilizing the unmatchable terroir with old world varietal selections. This allows it to grow grapes to their optimal maturity, creating unique wines of supreme quality. With premier growing grounds along the California Central Coast, Sextant Winery takes great pride in planting clean certified Sunridge Nursery ENTAV/INRA nursery stock. Allowing the rich terroir of the land to nurture the vines ensuring richness and unsurpassed quality which is honored by producing wines that reflect an uncompromised quality.
Sextant Central Coast Chard 2012 – Chardonnay from Sarmento Vineyards in the prestigious Santa Lucia Highlands appellation of Monterey County, and our MacGregor Vineyard, one of the oldest vineyards in the Edna Valley appellation. The 2012 Central Coast Chardonnay has elegant body perfumed with orange blossoms and apple aromas. Ample flavors of crisp pears, chewy apricots, and toasted walnuts are accented with fine hits of nutmeg, almonds, and peach-pie crust. There’s a charming buttery quality, with a slender puff of marshmallow, on the sumptuous and creamy finish. 89 Points – Wine Enthusiast
Sextant Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir 2013 – About 70% of the fruit for this wine was fermented in small five-ton open-top fermenters, with the balance in ten-ton tanks. Aged 11 months in Neutral French Oak barrels. It starts with the fragrance of wild strawberries, lavender, and anise, then followed on the mid-palate by cherries and loamy earthen notes with black truffles at the edges. Elegant tannins and balanced acidity provide a layered frame with hints of red currants and black tea pleasantly trailing on the finish. This wine has the depth of fruit conducive to aging several years, but can be enjoyed now especially with fresh pasta with a light marinara sauce, grilled prawns with a lime squeeze, or roasted quail wrapped in grape leaves and bacon.
Sextant Hollystone Zin 2012 – The ‘Holystone’ Zinfandel is comprised of a symphony of Paso Robles Zinfandel vineyards. With majority of the fruit from the Westside blended with premium rows from the East side Estate vineyard. The depth of this wine comes from ripe berries that are full of flavor having been harvested at the optimal time. It begins with violet and cedar aromas then continues with focused notes of dark cherries, blackberries, and black currants. Well-integrated tannins frame an assertive mid-palate as dark plums, graphite, and a hint of roasted almonds become apparent. Intricate shades of the profile release steadily on the persistent finish.
Sextant Night Watch 2012 – Aged 19 months in 22% new French and 15% new Hungarian oak. While blends should never be lacking in texture, complexity should figure most prominently for the completeness of an assembled wine. The 2012 Sextant Night Watch delivers in grand style. Blackberries and figs are woven together while cedar and sandalwood notes appear. Hints of cardamom and red currants operate at the edges as lively tannins allow the layers to coalesce. Tinged with slate and mesquite notes, the finish rolls to a satisfying end with complexity having been displayed. 91 Points – Wine Spectator
Sextant Carevio GSM Grenache 2010 – Grenache based GSM. 100% Estate fruit. Aged in 20% New French Oak. 70% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 5% Mourvedre. Only 466 Cases Produced. Grenache for the backbone, Syrah for the spice, and Mourvedre for depth and color. Much has been said about taking these three main varietals of Old World Southern Rhone and appropriating them to the New World Central Coast. Balance in the structure, vibrance in the fruit, and complexity in the texture are what this venerable fusion demands and the 2010 ‘Caverio’ fulfills its promise. Raspberries, strawberries, and cassis are pronounced, but also nuanced as the seamless tannins shroud the velvety texture. The finish is persistent and satisfying as plum skins, Asian spices, and piquant herbs become evident. Whether sipping the traditional version in the medieval town of Avignon or swirling a voguish edition of it in downtown Paso Robles, GSM blends, when made with care and craft, deliver with a flourish of style. 91 Points – Robert Parker
