Freemake Abbey – A Napa Valley Icon

The history of Freemark Abbey began in 1886, when Josephine Tychson became the first woman to build and operate a winery in California. The rustic stone building is still in use.   Freemark Abbey was the only winery involved in the famous (infamous according to the French) Paris tasting in 1976 that had both their Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon selected to compete.   The California wines in this tasting thrashed their French counterparts in an epic “blind tasting” with French judges and definitely elevated our status world-wide! An enjoyable movie – “Bottle Shock”,that details this event, was released in 2008 and is highly recommended.   Freemark Abbey winemaker Ted Edwards has been in charge since 1985 and continues to produce outstanding wines. We will taste and discuss four wonderful wines from Freemark Abbey with Sommellier Steve McAnlis of Regal Wine Company.

Gran Sarao Brut Cava NV - This “methode champenoise” sparkling wine from Spain is a great way to start the evening – and a great “champagne” to have on hand with the up-coming holidays. It has bright gold color, subtle aromas of apple, pear and melon, with a gentle mineral undertone.  Juicy, nicely concentrated orchard fruit and honeydew flavors are brightened by a hint of lemon pith.  Finishes on a soft pear note, with good focus and length. 88 Points from “stingy” Stephen Tanzer – International Wine Cellar: “Fresh lemon and pear on the nose, with spice and mineral notes adding lift…. This represents excellent value.”

Freemark Abbey Napa Valley Viognier 2013 - Brilliant greenish straw color introduces the vibrant aroma and flavors of Viognier. Volatiles such as mandarin orange, peach blossom, honey-suckle, guava and pink grapefruit dominate the aroma – very pleasant and full with great viscosity and balance. The Freemark Abbey Viognier is a very refreshing wine that yields both complexity and a pleasurable lingering experience.

Freemark Abbey Napa Valley Chardonnay 2013 -  Robert Parker 92 Points: “Notes of delicate pear, apple blossom and tropical fruits emerge from this classic Chardonnay. Medium to full-bodied with a greenish hue to its color, it exhibits impressive layers and minerality.”

Freemark Abbey Napa Valley Merlot 2012 – Robert Parker 92 Points: “A dense plum/purple color is followed by notes of chocolate, berries, tobacco leaf, forest floor and mocha. This lush, fruit-driven, hedonistic, sensual Merlot can be drunk over the next 7-8 years”.

Freemark Abbey Knight’s Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 – No score yet, but it is definitely going to be in the mid to high 90’s. This is the first ever release of a Freemark Abbey wine that is not from the Napa Valley. This epic Cabernet originates from the outstanding Kellogg Vineyard located on the Sonoma side of the Mayacamas Mountain range in Knight’s Valley. Yes, it’s near Peter Michael’s “les Pavots” vineyard ($150.00 + per bottle!). Very little available, and it is just wonderful! Loads of concentrated berry/cherry fruit with complementing oak and minerality. Steve has represented this winery off and on for over 25 years and states: “a lush Cabernet jammed with fruit, oak, and everything that makes this grape so seductive! It is my new favorite Freemark Abbey Cabernet – and I have enjoyed many!”

Delaforce, ‘His Eminence’s Choice’, 10 Year Old Port, Douro, Portugal, NV – This sumptuous and richly flavored tawny port is matured for ten years in seasoned oak casks. It combines ripe jammy fruit aromas with the rich mellow flavours of wood ageing and displays the characteristic elegance, balance and harmony of the Delaforce house style. Rich and round on the palate. Someday it is going to cool off, and this is just the right way to end the evening. A delicious, supple tawny port enjoyed with cheese and walnuts. A British tradition that is a classic and fun way to punctuate the evening – especially with the up-coming holidays!
