Merlot is a worldwide best seller grape and typically makes deep color, full body and strong, low tannin wines. It is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. Along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, Merlot is one of the primary grapes used in Bordeaux wine. It is also one of the most popular red wine varietals in many markets and one of the world’s most planted grape varieties. There tends to be two main styles in making merlot wine. The “International style” favored by many New World wine regions tends to emphasis late harvesting to gain physiological ripeness and produce inky, purple colored wines that are full in body with high alcohol and lush, velvety tannins with intense, plum and blackberry fruit. The traditional “Bordeaux style” of Merlot involves harvesting Merlot earlier to maintain acidity and producing more medium-bodied wines with moderate alcohol levels that have fresh, red fruit flavors of raspberries and strawberries and potentially leafy, vegetal notes.

Peju Merlot 2012 – Established in 1983, Peju Family Winery is dedicated to producing balanced, expressive, and elegant wines from organic and sustainably farmed vineyards in the renowned Rutherford appellation at Napa Valley. They craft single varietal and blended wines that showcase the essential taste of the vineyard. Peju has been named Top Artisan Winery of the Year by Wine & Spirits Magazine and has been noted as a producer of Top California Cabernets by Wine Spectator. The estate grown Merlot is a luscious wine with plum, black currant, cola, anise and vanilla in the nose and on the palate. Blended with a small amount of Malbec, the texture is soft and full with gentle, well-developed tannins in the finish. This is the perfect choice for stews, pork, lamb and sausages.

Swanson Merlot 2011 – Founded by W. Clarke Swanson, Jr. in 1985, Swanson Vineyards consists of 140 acres of estate vineyards in the Oakville area of Napa Valley. Merlot has remained at the core Swanson Vineyards’ identity since 1985. The clay-loam soil in the 75-acre Oakville vineyard and close relationships with several of Napa’s best growers are the most vital factors in their quest to make Napa Valley’s premier Merlo. The 2011 Swanson Napa Valley Merlot presents immediate appeal, showing a vibrant garnet color and robust aromas of freshly-crushed red and black cherries. Notes of sweet blackberry, coffee and allspice add further complexity. In the mouth, the wine exhibits ample black and red fruits, medium body and a fragrant, lingering finish. Expect optimum drinkability from 2014 through 2022.

Domaine de Gournier Merlot 2013 - The Domaine de Gournier is situated in the foothills of the Cévennes Mountains, in the Gard, South France. Due to the domaine’s excellent position in the region, vines have been planted on the property since Roman times. In 1959, the domaine was purchased by the Barnouins, a family of viticultural pioneers who cultivated rootstock and introduced low-yielding clones into the region. The 2013 Merlot. Offering up solid dark fruits, earth and lots of herbal notes, it is medium-bodied, has a good texture and an easy going, quaffable feel. Drink it over the coming year or so.

Gundlach Merlot 2012 – Gundlach Bundschu Winery is a family-owned, sixth-generation producer of distinctive wines of site-specific character. The winery’s 320-acre Estate Vineyard, christened Rhinefarm in 1858, is located at the crossroads of the Sonoma Valley, Carneros and Napa Valley AVAs, at the base of the Mayacamas Mountain Range. The merlot, sourced primarily from the Bundschu family’s 150+year-old Rhinefarm Estate Vineyardon, is distinctively dark and weighty, and especially so in the 2012 vintage. Aromas of blueberries laced with black tea and cocoa are followed by beautifully integrated flavors of blue and purple fruits, semi-sweet chocolate, fresh tobacco leaf and spice box. Supple tannins add weight and a polished texture and lead to a lush finish of ripe berries laced with pekoe tea. Delicious upon release, this Merlot will benefit from five years of cellaring from vintage and continue to age gracefully for at least ten years.

Clos du Val Merlot 2011 - Clos Du Val, French for “small vineyard estate of a small valley,” was founded in 1972 in the now legendary Stags Leap District by Franco-American entrepreneur John Goelet. With vineyard properties which to craft world-class wines, 150 acres in Stags Leap and 180 acres in Carneros, solidifies Clos Du Val’s iconic stature and formidable place in Napa Valley history.  The 2011 Merlot, characteristic of Clos Du Val’s world-class style, continues the winery’s tradition of producing truly elegant wines of balance and complexity. Refined and plum in color, it offers complex yet vibrant aromas of black currant, dark chocolate, nutmeg and toffee. The mouth-feel is silky and evolved, with flavors of black cherry and blueberry complimented by a silky, lingering finish.
